Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Dwarf Form of Japanese Blueberry?
Answered by: Anne Van Nest
QUESTION:
Is there a dwarf variety of Japanese blueberry that will grow in my area? Or is it so non-native that it's not in your category?ANSWER:
Japanese blueberry (Elaeocarpus decipiens) is from SE Asia and not a native plant to North America, so we don't have information about the plant in our database. A quick online search though did show at least one dwarf introduction called Little Emperor Japanese Blueberry Shogun Series, Elaeocarpus decipiens 'MonProud' from one of the major U.S. nurseries.
