Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Native cherry trees for Georgia
Answered by: Nan Hampton
QUESTION:
Is it possible to grow any type of cherry in Georgia, USA?ANSWER:
There are four trees native to Georgia that are technically cherries:Prunus pensylvanica (pin cherry), Prunus serotina (black cherry), Prunus virginiana (chokecherry) and
Prunus caroliniana (Carolina laurelcherry).
All of these have fruits that are attractive to birds and other wildlife. The first three also have fruit that is edible by humans, although it is best when used to make jelly and wine. When eating the berries, care should be taken not to eat the seeds. The seeds, stems and leaves for all species are toxic: P. pensylvanica, P. serotina, P. virginiana, P. caroliniana
