Native Plants
Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?
A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.
Did you know you can access the Native Plant Information Network with your web-enabled smartphone?
Ask Mr. Smarty Plants is a free service provided by the staff and volunteers at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Title: Is Asclepias purpurascens a Texas native?
Answered by: Nan Hampton
QUESTION:
Is the Asclepias purpurascens a Texas native plant? If so where does it grow?ANSWER:
Asclepias purpurascens (Purple milkweed) is species that occurs in the most of the eastern half of North America. You can see by this USDA Plants Database county distribution map for Texas that it has been reported only for Bowie County in the northeast corner of Texas. So, technically, it might be considered a native, but just barely! However, I very much doubt that it would do very well in Bexar County where you live.
