Q. Who is Mr. Smarty Plants?

A: There are those who suspect Wildflower Center volunteers are the culpable and capable culprits. Yet, others think staff members play some, albeit small, role. You can torture us with your plant questions, but we will never reveal the Green Guru's secret identity.

Please forgive us, but Mr. Smarty Plants has been overwhelmed by a flood of mail and must take a break for awhile to catch up. We hope to be accepting new questions again soon. Thank you!

Title: Is Clethra alnifolia toxic to dogs?
Answered by: Nan Hampton

QUESTION:

Is Clethra alnifolia toxic to dogs?

ANSWER:

Clethra alnifolia (Coastal sweet pepperbush) doesn't occur on any of the following toxic plant databases:

Toxic and Non-Toxic Plant List – Dogs

University of Pennsylvania Poisonous Plants

Poisonous Plants of North Carolina

Cornell University Plants Poisonous to Livestock

Canadian Poisonous Plants Information System

This doesn't necessarily mean that it wouldn't have a detrimental effect on your dog if he/she ate a large quantity of the plant; however, since it doesn't occur on any of the toxic plant databases, it isn't likely to be a serious reaction.
