Original Format: Digital Orientation: Landscape Shot: Close-up of a plant. Photographer's note: "This very small West Indian dwarf polypody fern may be the rarest fern in North America, at least in the sporophyte stage. I looked for the fern for years at its only known location in North America without finding it. Finally in 2001 I found a single plant and photographed it. I can't find it every year. The last time I photographed it was in 2009. The plant looked better then. I assume it is a very old plant. Last night I visited the site after dark and spent an hour with a bright light searching for more plants. I like searching at night so I'm not ask a hundred times what I am looking for. After an exhaustive search, I can still only find one plant. " Date Taken: 2012-11-11 NPIN Image Id: 41471
