Original Format: Digital Orientation: Portrait Shot: Close-up of flowers along with fruits (pomes) persisting from the previous year. Photographer's note: "Fruits of Photinia pyrifolia sometimes persists through the winter months into the next spring. Red chokeberry is a common shrub in the Carolina Sandhills, growing along pond edges, pocosin margins, and streamheads. The buds appear in early spring and the shrubs are among the earliest bloomers in the Sandhills. The small, bright white blossoms with showy pink anthers are very attractive when the blossoms first open. The fruits apparently are not very attractive to birds and, like the bright berries of Smilax walteri, these fruits often make it through the winter unconsumed. Note shriveled fruits still present as new blossoms appear." Date Taken: 2012-03-15 NPIN Image Id: 46466
