A 2-6 in., several-stemmed violet with attractive lobed and dissected, somewhat leathery, basal leaves and showy bicolored flowers. The upper pair of flower petals are deep reddish-violet; the lower three petals are pale to darker lilac, with yellowish or whitish bases and purple pencilling or blotching.
The Sagebrush Violet is a member of the violet family (family Violaceae). Violets are rather dainty herbs with perky, colorful flowers in the United States, but often shrubby and less showy elsewhere. There are about 22 genera and 900 species found nearly throughout the world. Many species of Violets, including Pansies, are cultivated for their pretty flowers.
